Everyone wants to have a happy home, a place they feel comfortable, cozy and content. One way to get a happy home? Purge excess stuff! Today, I’m sharing five things to purge for a happier home!

Okay, okay, so maybe your home won’t necessarily be happier if you get rid of these things, but we all have those items that we hold onto for various reasons that are making our homes feel stuck or uninviting.

The most common reason for holding onto things we don’t love is guilt; we feel guilty for getting rid of something useful, or something that was given to us. If you can set aside the guilt, though, and look over your home with a detached eye, you can take your style to the next level and feel happier in your space.

Inherited or Gifted Items That You Don’t Love. This is a really hard one, I get it. Obviously keep the things you really love or that have special sentimentality attached to them, but if you don’t love or like it, and can’t think of a way to repurpose it (repainting or refinishing items is one way to do this), consider donating it. You and your home (and the recipient of your gifted item) will be happier because of it.

Promotional or Free Items. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have lots of items that fall into this category. Can cozies, tshirts, hats and tote bags are all great if you have a personal connection to the company or just really love the item, but apart from that consider passing the item along to someone who’d appreciate it more.

Unfinished Projects. We all have these. Half-finished craft projects, model kits, sewing projects, etc are fine to keep if you are intent on actually finishing them, otherwise, just toss them or pass them onto to someone who’d appreciate them. One bonus to this? You’ll also get rid of the guilt you feel each time you pass your half-finished project.

-Unnecessary Clutter and Things You’ll Never Use Again. Magazines you’ll never read, books you didn’t enjoy, itchy blankets you’ll never use, socks that are missing their mate, old calendars, stained or holey clothes…you get the idea. If it’s not something you enjoy having around your home and someone that you’ll never use again, get rid of it.

-Items That Just Aren’t Your Style Anymore. Futons, papasan chairs, animal print rugs…anything that may have been your style at one point, but isn’t anymore, is a great thing to donate. Your home will be more cohesive, more you, and happier for not having items in it that are at odds with your current style.
