Moving. It’s something we all do several times in our lives (at least!), yet it’s something that never seems to get any easier. Until now. Today, I’m sharing my five favorite, tried-and-true moving tips & tricks designed to make your next move go as smoothly and effortlessly as possible.

moving tips

#1: Plan ahead. Tend to do things off the cuff? Hate pre-planning? You’ll want to make an exception for moving. Planning ahead, printing out a moving checklist (see Pinterest for lots of examples), and donating items that you don’t want to take with you will go a long way towards a less stressful move.

#2: Consider furniture rental. After you purchase your new home or apartment, a company such as CORT Furniture Rental will help take the pressure of quickly furnishing your new space off your hands. CORT can easily and stylishly furnish your space as you settle in and shop around for furniture to fit your new life and home.

Moving is always a time of change and transition, having CORT handle your furniture rental needs will ease at least one hassle during the moving process. They can manage it all, from moving your furniture in, to setting it up, to coming back and removing it when you need it gone.

There are many other reasons to rent furniture, from frequent relocating, to being in the military or in school, or maybe you’d just like a little design help as you figure out your style! No matter what transition you’re going through, CORT is there to help.

#3: Label boxes well and consider designating one box for essentials. If you spend the time while you’re packing to label boxes well, either by which room in your new house the box belongs in, or even more simply, which floor the box needs to go to, your moving helpers can easily place boxes in their correct space. Having one box set aside for can’t-live-without items (such as your checkbook, phone and laptop chargers, toilet paper, hand soap, etc.) will save you from having to root through endless boxes your first night in your new place.

#4: Pack carefully and methodically. Throwing everything in a garbage bag and hoping for the best is a surefire way to end up with broken and damaged items. Splurge on packing boxes and bubble wrap to make sure fragile items arrive at their new home safely and intact. This is so much easier with a friend, by the way. Grab a friend or two, some pizza and a bottle of wine, and packing is no longer a chore, it’s a social event!

moving tips

#5: Take a deep breath, and try not to stress out. Moving IS stressful, no doubt about it. With a bit of pre-planning, though, and a calm attitude, moving doesn’t have to be a hair-pulling experience. Schedule time for yourself, whether it’s to work out, meditate, or relax in a bath, to help keep your moving experience (and yourself) sane and stress-free.
